How many lights for a 9 ft Christmas tree?
A 9 ft Christmas tree takes about 900 lights at the usual 100 per foot — 9 strings of 100 — or about 1,350 for a bright tree.
How to work it out
- 9 ft × 100 per foot = 900 lights
- 900 lights ÷ 100 per string = 9 strings
A 9 ft tree fills a room with a high ceiling, and lighting it is a ladder job. Nine strings of 100 is the classic count; the tricky part is plugging in that many safely.
Adjust for your project
- Strings to buy
- 9 strings
- Separate runs to plug in
- check the maximum on the box — LED strings can usually connect more
- Lights per foot of height
- 100
- LED sets list how many can be connected end to end on the box or tag. Stay under that number, and under three sets per extension cord (CPSC).
- Use lights with a UL, CSA or ETL label, check every string for broken sockets or frayed wire before it goes on, and never put electric lights on a metallic tree (CPSC).
- On a tall tree, run strings from the bottom up so the plug end is at the base, and use a timer so nobody leaves them on overnight.

|---|---|---|
| 3 ft | 300 lights | 3 strings |
| 4 ft | 400 lights | 4 strings |
| 5 ft | 500 lights | 5 strings |
| 6 ft | 600 lights | 6 strings |
| 6.5 ft | 650 lights | 7 strings |
| 7 ft | 700 lights | 7 strings |
| 7.5 ft | 750 lights | 8 strings |
| 8 ft | 800 lights | 8 strings |
| 9 ft | 900 lights | 9 strings |
| 10 ft | 1,000 lights | 10 strings |
| 12 ft | 1,200 lights | 12 strings |
Nine hundred lights, more for a full tree
At about 100 lights per foot, a standard 9 ft tree takes 900 mini lights. A 9 ft tree is often wide too — full trees of this height need about a quarter more, roughly 1,125, and a bright full tree can take 1,700 or more. Buying strings of 150 or 300 cuts down the number of plugs and connections.
| 9 ft tree | Lights (classic) | Strings of 100 | Strings of 300 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slim | 675 | 7 | 3 |
| Standard | 900 | 9 | 3 |
| Full | 1,125 | 12 | 4 |
| Full, bright (150/ft) | 1,688 | 17 | 6 |
Plugging in a tall tree
With incandescent strings, CPSC and ESFI say never more than three connected end to end — nine strings means at least three separate runs, and CPSC advises no more than three standard sets per extension cord. LED strings use far less power and usually allow more per run, but the number on the box is the limit. On a tall tree, run cords down the back of the trunk, keep the plug ends at the base, and use a rated power strip rather than a chain of cords.
- Light from the bottom up, one section at a time, plugging each string into the one below.
- Work from a stable ladder, not a chair.
- Turn them off at bedtime and when you leave the house; a timer does it for you.

What you’ll need
- LED mini lights (100-light strings)Budget price
LED mini lights run cool and draw a fraction of the power of incandescent strings, so more strings can be connected end to end — follow the limit on the box.
