Table seating chart: how many people per table, and tables for your guests

A quick reference for renting tables: how many people each common table seats, comfortably and at a squeeze, how many tables a guest list needs, and how much floor the tables take. Seating counts come from Lifetime, the folding-table maker, and Bright Event Rentals’ planning guide.

How many people fit at each table

Lifetime: 48 in round 5, 60 in round 8, 72 in round 10, 6 ft rectangle 8 and 8 ft rectangle 10 with chairs at the ends. Bright Event Rentals: 48 in 6–8, 60 in 8–10, 66 in 9–11, 72 in 10–12, 6 ft 6–8, 8 ft 8–10, and floor space (60 in round 10 ft circle, 72 in round 11 ft circle, 6 ft table 11 × 7 ft, 8 ft table 13 × 7 ft). Floor space for 48 and 66 in rounds is estimated between those.

“Comfortable” here means room for a full place setting: plate, bread plate, glasses and elbows. “Maximum” is fine for a buffet, a kids’ table or a short event. For rectangular tables, comfortable is sides only and maximum adds a chair at each end. Detailed pages: how many people fit at a 60 inch round table and how many people fit at an 8 foot table.

For the two counts people ask about most, the worked pages go further — layouts, linens and the extra tables: how many tables for 100 guests and how many tables for 50 guests.

Chairs

One chair per guest, plus about 5% spare for late RSVPs, a high chair or a broken chair. If ceremony chairs are moved to the reception, count them once but plan the time and people to move them. Bright Event Rentals’ tables are 30 in high, the standard dining height, so standard folding or banquet chairs fit.

The tables nobody sits at

  • Buffet: at least one 8 ft table, two-sided for a big crowd. Bright allows about 60 sq ft per 8 ft buffet, head or DJ table, plus 8 to 10 ft of clearance around buffets and bars.
  • Bar: about 100 sq ft per 6 ft bar (Bright).
  • Head or sweetheart table: rectangular tables, usually facing the room.
  • Cake, gifts, guest book, favors: a small table each — 4 or 6 ft, or a 30 to 48 in round.

Fitting it in the room or tent

Multiply the tables by their floor space for a first estimate of the seating area, then add the dance floor, buffets, bar and aisles. A hundred guests at 60 in rounds need about 1,000 sq ft for the tables alone; with a dance floor and service tables, a tent of about 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft — a 30 × 60 or 40 × 60 ft tent — worked through in what size tent for 100 guests. The dance floor is in how big a dance floor for 100 guests, and lights for the tent in how many string lights for a 20x40 tent.

Linens for each table

Each guest table needs a cloth; on a standard 30 in high table a floor-length cloth is the table plus 30 in on every side — 120 in round for a 60 in table, 90 × 132 in for a 6 ft table. The tablecloth size chart lists them all, and what size tablecloth for a 60 inch round table explains the choice between 120 and 132 in.
