How we got this

50 guests × 1.5 × 1.1 extra = 83 cupcakes

83 cupcakes ÷ 24 per box = 4 boxes · ÷ 12 per pan = 7 pans

  • Fill liners about two-thirds full (Wilton). Overfilled cupcakes spill over and run together.

Cupcakes are easy to count — one per person, more or less — but easy to under-bake for, because the guest count is not the cupcake count. Some guests take two, some take one home, and the pretty ones on top of the tower vanish first. This calculator multiplies guests by cupcakes each, adds a little extra, and turns it into boxes of mix and pans to bake.

Boxes of mix and batches

Wilton says the batter from one box of mix or a standard cake recipe makes about 2 dozen standard cupcakes, at ¼ to ⅓ cup each, or about 5 dozen minis or 1 dozen jumbos. Betty Crocker’s box agrees on 24 standard cupcakes (30 at high altitude). Fill each liner about two-thirds full.

cupcakes = guests × cupcakes each × (1 + extra), rounded up
boxes of mix = cupcakes ÷ 24 (standard) · 60 (mini) · 12 (jumbo)
pans = cupcakes ÷ 12 (standard) · 24 (mini) · 6 (jumbo)

Tips

  • Bake a day ahead, frost on the day. Unfrosted cupcakes keep well covered at room temperature overnight.
  • A cutting cake for the photo. At weddings, a small cake on top of the cupcake tower gives the couple something to cut; count it in the cake serving calculator.
  • Frosting goes further than you think, but piped swirls use about twice as much as a spread layer.
  • Transport in boxes or a carrier. A tray of frosted cupcakes in a car is a gamble.
