How much food for 100 people?
A buffet for 100 people with two mains, three sides, rolls and dessert comes to about 168 lb of food: 27.5 lb of each cooked main, 27.5 lb of each side, 110 rolls and 110 servings of dessert, with 10% extra.
How to work it out
- 100 guests = 100 adults × 1.1 (appetite & extra)
- Main: 8 oz each = 55 lb (27.5 lb of each)
- Sides: 3 × 4 oz each = 27.5 lb per dish · Rolls: 110 rolls · Dessert: 110 servings
- Total ≈ 168 lb (1.53 lb per adult before extra)
A hundred guests is a wedding, a big anniversary or a company picnic. At that size most hosts offer two mains, and the quantities move from home kitchen to catering pans: a few hundred pounds of shopping, cooked in batches.

Two mains for a hundred
With two main dishes the calculator plans 4 oz of each per guest — 8 oz of main dish in total, a little more than the 6 oz for a single main, because given a choice people take some of both. For 100 guests with 10% extra that is about 27½ lb of each main, cooked. In raw terms: about 53 lb of bone-in pork shoulder for one, or about 41 lb of bone-in chicken breasts for the other at the USDA Food Buying Guide yields.
| Course | For 100 (incl. 10% extra) | In catering pans (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Each main, cooked (4 oz each) | about 27½ lb | about seven half-size pans per main |
| Each of 3 sides (4 oz each) | about 27½ lb | about 14 qt — four half-size pans per side |
| Rolls | 110 | about 9 dozen |
| Dessert | 110 servings | wedding cake plus sheet cake, or cupcakes |
| Total | about 168 lb | about 1½ lb per guest before the extra |
Running a buffet this size safely
- Two lines, not one. A double-sided buffet serves a hundred in about half the time, so food spends less time on the table.
- Replace, do not top up. Extension food-safety advice is to bring out fresh pans rather than adding food to a pan that has been sitting out.
- Hold temperatures. Hot food at 140 °F or above in chafing dishes; cold salads at 40 °F or below on ice.
- Two hours. Anything perishable that has been out for 2 hours (1 hour above 90 °F) should be thrown away, not saved.
