How much baked beans for 50 people?
For 50 people, plan on about 11 qt of baked beans (24.8 lb) with 10% extra — Iowa State Extension’s 2½ gallons for 50, plus the extra.
How to work it out
- 50 adults × 1.1 (appetite & extra) = 55 servings × 7.2 oz (about 0.8 cup) = 24.8 lb
- 11 qt ÷ about 4 qt per half-size pan = 3 pans
Baked beans are the cheapest side at a cookout and one of the most popular. Iowa State Extension’s figure for fifty guests is generous — 2½ gallons — because beans are the side people come back for.

Gallons, cans and pans
Two and a half gallons for 50 is about ¾ cup per guest, more than the ½ cup most quantity tables use for a side. That is deliberate: at a barbecue, beans are often the second-biggest thing on the plate after the meat. If beans are one of four or five sides, set the appetite to light and the calculator drops it to about 9 quarts.

| 20 | about 4½ qt | about 10 lb | 2 |

| 100 | about 22 qt (5½ gal) | about 50 lb | 6 |
Canned baked beans are labelled by weight, and most of that weight is the beans and sauce you will serve. Add up the net weight on the cans until it reaches the pound figure above; the big catering-size cans list their net weight too, so a few of them can replace a cart full of small ones.
Doctoring and holding
- Bake them in pans with onion, brown sugar and bacon; two or three half-size pans fit a home oven at once.
- Slow cookers hold beans hot for hours; each 6 qt cooker holds about a pan’s worth.
- Keep them at 140 °F or above on the table, and refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
