A tablecloth is the table plus the drop on both sides. The drop is how far the cloth hangs over the edge: about 6 to 8 in is a casual lap length, about 15 in is a halfway drop, and on a standard 30 in high table, a 30 in drop reaches the floor. Rental and linen companies all use the same arithmetic.

Tips
- Measure the table, not the listing. Folding tables vary by an inch or two; a “6 ft” table is usually 72 × 30 in, but check.
- Floor-length hides the legs of folding tables and the boxes under a buffet. It is the usual choice for weddings and banquets.
- Lap length for eating. At a casual dinner, a cloth that ends in guests’ laps is easier to sit at.
- Pooling — a cloth longer than the table height — looks dramatic but catches feet and chair legs; keep it off tables people walk past.
