- Tent sizes that fit
- 30 × 60 ft or 40 × 60 ft
- For guests
- 1,200 sq ft
- Dance floor and the space around it
- 300 sq ft
- Buffets, bars and DJ
- 220 sq ft
- Per guest, all in
- 17.2 sq ft
Guests: 100 × 12 sq ft (round tables, standard) = 1,200 sq ft
Dance floor: 100 × 40% ÷ 2 couples × 12 sq ft × 1.25 = 300 sq ft
Service: 2 × 60 + 1 × 100 sq ft = 220 sq ft → 1,720 sq ft → 30 × 60 ft or 40 × 60 ft
- 12 sq ft per seated guest matches the table calculator: a 60 in round with eight chairs takes a 10 ft circle, about 79 sq ft, or 10 sq ft a guest before aisles.
- Leave 8 to 10 ft clear around buffets and bars, and aisles at least 3 ft wide (Bright).

Tent size comes down to square feet per guest, plus the things guests do not sit at. Bright Event Rentals’ room-planning chart gives the usual working figures — 10 to 12 sq ft per guest at round tables, 8 to 10 at banquet tables, about 6 standing — and then you add the dance floor, buffet and bar. Anchor Industries, a tent maker, publishes slightly tighter capacities, about 10 sq ft per seated guest. Bright’s tent section also gives bigger all-in minimums — 20 sq ft per guest at rounds — that already include the extras; use one approach or the other, never both.
Square feet per guest
| Layout | Standard + extras | Tight + extras | All-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seated dinner at round tables | 12 sq ft | 10 sq ft | 20 sq ft |
| Long banquet tables, or a buffet | 10 sq ft | 7.5 sq ft | 18 sq ft |
| Cocktail party, some seating | 8 sq ft | 7 sq ft | 12 sq ft |
| Standing cocktail party | 6 sq ft | 6 sq ft | 6 sq ft |
| Chairs in rows (ceremony) | 8 sq ft | 7 sq ft | 10 sq ft |
Adding the extras
- Dance floor: Bright plans for 40% of guests dancing at once, 12 sq ft per couple, plus 25% around the floor. See the dance floor calculator.
- Buffet, head table, DJ: about 60 sq ft per 8 ft table.
- Bar: about 100 sq ft per 6 ft bar.
- Aisles and clearance: aisles about 3 ft wide; 8 to 10 ft clear around buffets and bars.
tent area = guests × sq ft per guest + dance floor × 1.25 + 60 × buffet tables + 100 × bars dance floor = guests × 40% ÷ 2 × 12 sq ft all-in: tent area = guests × all-in allowance (nothing added)

Before you book
- Measure the site, with the tent stakes or ballast outside the tent itself — a 40 × 60 ft tent needs more than 40 × 60 ft of flat ground.
- Permits and inspections. Many towns require a permit for event tents over a set size, and the fire marshal sets the occupancy.
- Weather plan. Sidewalls, heaters or fans change the usable space; ask the rental company.
- Tables first. Count tables with the table calculator — its floor-space figure is the seating part of this total.
- Lights last. Strands for a common rental size are counted in how many string lights for a 20x40 tent.
