How many bottles of wine for 50 guests?

Short answer

If 60% of 50 adult guests drink wine over a 2½-hour evening (2½ glasses each), plan on 17 bottles (750 ml) with 10% extra — about 1 case + 5 bottles — for 75 glasses at 5 oz.

How to work it out

  1. 50 adults × 60% = 30 drinkers × 2.5 glasses (1 + 1 × 1.5 more hours) = 75 glasses
  2. 750 ml ÷ 5 oz = 5.1 glasses per bottle → 75 glasses ÷ 5.1 + 10% = 17 bottles

Fifty adults is a rehearsal dinner, a milestone birthday or a big dinner party. Wine for that many comes to well under two cases once you count the people who will actually drink it.

Seventeen bottles, and how the number moves

Thirty wine drinkers at two and a half glasses each pour 75 glasses. At NIAAA’s 5 oz standard pour, a 750 ml bottle gives about five glasses, so that is 15 bottles, and 17 with 10% extra. The number is most sensitive to two things: how many of the fifty drink wine, and how long the evening runs.

Five 5 oz glasses per 750 ml bottle. Drinkers and glasses each are planning choices.

Buying for fifty

  • Two cases covers most versions of this party, with bottles left over. Mix red and white by what your guests drink.
  • Chill early. White, rosé and sparkling need a few hours in the fridge or 30 minutes in ice water.
  • Water on every table, and a non-alcoholic option that looks as good as the wine.
