Appetizers are counted in pieces: one bite-sized item — a stuffed mushroom, a meatball on a pick, a shrimp, a slider, a small skewer, a deviled egg half. How many each guest eats depends mostly on two things: whether a meal is coming and how long the party lasts. People eat most in the first hour and slow down after.
How many appetizers per person?
| Kind of party | First hour | Each hour after | For a 3-hour party |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before a sit-down dinner | 4 pieces | 2 pieces | 8 pieces |
| Cocktail party or reception, dinner later or not expected | 6 pieces | 4 pieces | 14 pieces |
| Heavy hors d’oeuvres instead of a meal | 9 pieces | 5 pieces | 19 pieces |
There is no government or extension table for appetizers the way there is for a turkey or a ham, so these are planning figures, and every one can be moved with the appetite setting. One useful cross-check: Iowa State Extension plans 1 to 1½ lb of food per guest for a party meal. If heavy appetizers are standing in for dinner, the total should land somewhere near that — around twenty bite-sized pieces of an ounce or so each, over three hours.
pieces per adult = first-hour rate + later-hour rate × (hours − 1) pieces = (guests − ½ × children) × pieces per adult × appetite × (1 + extra) each kind = pieces ÷ number of kinds
Worked examples
- How many appetizers for 50 people — a three-hour cocktail party or open house.
- How many appetizers per person for a cocktail hour — a wedding reception before dinner.
- How many appetizers per person with no dinner — heavy hors d’oeuvres as the meal.
Tips
- More kinds is not more food. Six or eight kinds is plenty for most parties; the total stays the same and each tray just gets smaller.
- Mix hot and cold, light and filling. At least a third of the pieces should be substantial when there is no meal.
- Put out small platters and replace them. Extension food-safety advice is to use several small platters and swap them, not top them up, and to hold hot food at 140 °F or above and cold at 40 °F or below.
- Add a board. A cheese and charcuterie board covers a lot of grazing; the charcuterie board calculator sizes it.
What you’ll need
- Chafing dish buffet setMid-range price
Keeps hot food hot on a buffet line. A full-size pan holds two half-size pans, so one set can serve two dishes.

A big board or two smaller ones. For a crowd, several small boards around the room keep lines short.

Sturdy plates that do not fold under a scoop of baked beans. Get small ones too for dessert.

Frequently asked questions
How many appetizers per person?
Plan about 4 to 6 pieces per guest for the first hour, and 2 to 4 for each hour after, depending on whether a meal follows. Heavy appetizers instead of dinner need more — around 15 to 20 pieces over a three-hour party.
How many different appetizers should I serve?
Five to eight kinds suits most parties of 20 to 100. More variety does not mean more food in total; the calculator divides the same total among the kinds.
How many appetizers for a party of 30?
For a three-hour cocktail party at this calculator’s defaults, about 14 pieces each — roughly 460 pieces with 10% extra. Before a dinner, about 130 pieces for an hour.
What counts as one appetizer piece?
One bite or two: a meatball, a stuffed mushroom, a small skewer, a shrimp, half a deviled egg, a slider, a mini quiche. A cracker with cheese counts as one.
