How many appetizers for 50 people?
For a three-hour cocktail party for 50, plan on about 770 pieces — 129 pieces of each of 6 kinds, including 10% extra.
How to work it out
- Per adult: 6 in the first hour + 4 × 2 more hours = 14 pieces
- 50 adults × 14 × 1.1 (appetite & extra) = 770 pieces ÷ 6 kinds = 129 pieces each
Fifty guests at a three-hour cocktail party, open house or holiday party, with no sit-down dinner expected but no full buffet either: the classic “heavy-ish” appetizer party. It is roughly 64 dozen bites, which is a real cooking project.

Where 770 pieces come from
At this calculator’s cocktail-party rate, each guest eats about 6 pieces in the first hour and 4 in each hour after: 14 over three hours. Fifty guests make 700, and 10% extra brings it to 770. Split among six kinds, that is about 130 of each — two full sheet pans of meatballs, a hundred-odd stuffed mushrooms, and so on.
| Party for 50 | Pieces (with 10% extra) | Of each of 6 kinds |
|---|---|---|
| Before a dinner, 1 hour | about 220 | about 37 |
| Cocktail party, 2 hours | about 550 | about 92 |
| Cocktail party, 3 hours | about 770 | about 129 |
| Heavy appetizers as the meal, 3 hours | about 1,045 | about 175 |
Making 64 dozen manageable
- Mix bought and homemade. A cheese board, a vegetable tray and a shrimp platter cover a lot of pieces with little cooking.
- Choose make-ahead items. Meatballs, mini quiches and stuffed mushrooms freeze or hold well; fried items do not.
- Stagger the trays. Put out half at the start, the rest in the second hour, so the last guests are not looking at empty platters.
- Hot at 140 °F, cold at 40 °F. Chafing dishes for meatballs and wings; ice under shrimp and dips.
A board does a lot of the work: charcuterie board for 20 people shows the cheese and meat per guest, and scales to fifty. For a wedding version, see how many appetizers per person for a cocktail hour; for appetizers as the whole meal, how many appetizers per person with no dinner.
