Sides, ends and long rows
An 8 ft table is 96 in long, so four chairs along a side get 24 in each — a comfortable place setting. Lifetime counts one more chair at each end for ten; at a standard 30 in width, the end seat is a little tight for a full meal but fine for a buffet plate. A 6 ft table works the same way with three a side: six, or eight with the ends. Bright Event Rentals gives the same ranges, 8 to 10 and 6 to 8.

Tables end to end
Push tables together into a long row and the ends in the middle disappear: two 8 ft tables seat sixteen down the sides plus one at each far end, eighteen in all, instead of twenty as separate tables. Long rows look great for a family-style dinner but need space to walk around — Bright allows about 13 × 7 ft per 8 ft table including chairs.
