What size tent for 100 guests?
A seated dinner for 100 guests at round tables, with a dance floor, two buffet tables and a bar, needs about 1,720 sq ft — a 30 × 60 ft or 40 × 60 ft tent.
How to work it out
- Guests: 100 × 12 sq ft (round tables, standard) = 1,200 sq ft
- Dance floor: 100 × 40% ÷ 2 couples × 12 sq ft × 1.25 = 300 sq ft
- Service: 2 × 60 + 1 × 100 sq ft = 220 sq ft → 1,720 sq ft → 30 × 60 ft or 40 × 60 ft
A hundred guests under canvas is the classic backyard or farm wedding. With a dance floor, a buffet and a bar inside, it usually means a 30 × 60 or 40 × 60 ft tent — worth working out before you call for quotes.
Adjust for your project
- Tent sizes that fit
- 30 × 60 ft or 40 × 60 ft
- For guests
- 1,200 sq ft
- Dance floor and the space around it
- 300 sq ft
- Buffets, bars and DJ
- 220 sq ft
- Per guest, all in
- 17.2 sq ft
- 12 sq ft per seated guest matches the table calculator: a 60 in round with eight chairs takes a 10 ft circle, about 79 sq ft, or 10 sq ft a guest before aisles.
- Leave 8 to 10 ft clear around buffets and bars, and aisles at least 3 ft wide (Bright).
Tent area by number of guests (layout and extras as above)
| Guests | Tent area needed | Tent sizes that fit |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 670 sq ft | 20 × 40 ft or 30 × 30 ft |
| 50 | 970 sq ft | 30 × 45 ft or 40 × 40 ft |
| 75 | 1,345 sq ft | 30 × 45 ft or 40 × 40 ft |
| 100 | 1,720 sq ft | 30 × 60 ft or 40 × 60 ft |
| 150 | 2,470 sq ft | 40 × 80 ft or 60 × 60 ft |
| 200 | 3,220 sq ft | 60 × 60 ft or 40 × 100 ft |
| 250 | 3,970 sq ft | 40 × 100 ft or 60 × 90 ft |
Three ways to count it
| For 100 guests | Standard + extras | Tight + extras | All-in (Bright) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seating at rounds | 1,200 sq ft (12 each) | 1,000 sq ft (10 each) | 2,000 sq ft (20 each) |
| Dance floor + 25% | 300 sq ft | 300 sq ft | included |
| 2 buffets + 1 bar | 220 sq ft | 220 sq ft | included |
| Total | about 1,720 sq ft | about 1,520 sq ft | about 2,000 sq ft |
| Tent | 30 × 60 or 40 × 60 ft | 40 × 40 or 30 × 60 ft | 40 × 60 ft |
All three land on the same answer for most hundred-guest weddings: a 40 × 60 ft tent gives the standard plan room to breathe, and a 30 × 60 ft tent works if the site is narrow. Anchor Industries suggests going up a size once a dance floor, stage or bar goes in, which is why the tight column still ends up near 1,500 sq ft. Do not add the dance floor and buffet on top of the all-in figure — it already includes them.

- A dance floor of about 16 × 16 ft — see how big a dance floor for 100 guests.
- Buffet and bar at the ends, with 8 to 10 ft clear in front.
- Lights along the ridge and poles — the string lights calculator counts the strands.
Check the ground, too: the tent needs flat space plus room for stakes or ballast outside the walls, and many towns want a permit and a fire inspection for a tent this size.
