How big a dance floor for 100 guests?
For 100 guests, plan about 240 sq ft of dance floor — 40 dancing at once at 12 sq ft per couple — so rent a 16 ft × 16 ft (4 × 4 panels) floor.
How to work it out
- 100 guests × 40% = 40 dancing = 20 couples × 12 sq ft = 240 sq ft
- Rounded up to whole panels: 16 ft × 16 ft (4 × 4 panels)
For a hundred-guest wedding or party, the answer is usually a 16 × 16 ft floor. It is sized for the forty or so people on it at once, not for everyone.

Why 16 × 16 for a hundred
Bright Event Rentals’ planning guide expects about 40% of guests to dance at any one time and allows 12 sq ft per couple. For 100 guests that is 40 dancers, 20 couples, 240 sq ft. In 4 × 4 ft sections, the nearest square is 16 × 16 ft — 256 sq ft, sixteen panels. A 12 × 16 ft rectangle (192 sq ft) would be a little tight at the peak; a 20 × 20 ft floor (400 sq ft) would look half empty for most of the night.
| Floor | Area | Panels (4 × 4 ft) | Couples at 12 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12 ft | 144 sq ft | 9 | 12 |
| 12 × 16 ft | 192 sq ft | 12 | 16 |
| 16 × 16 ft | 256 sq ft | 16 | 21 |
| 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft | 25 | 33 |
When to go up a size
- A dancing crowd. If you know most guests will be up for the big songs, set the share to 60% — the floor becomes 20 × 20 ft.
- Group dances. Line dances and circle dances spread out more than couples.
- A band rather than a DJ. The band needs its own stage space next to the floor.
The tent around it: what size tent for 100 guests. The tables: how many tables for 100 guests.
